Kyphoplasty

If you have a vertebral compression fracture, you may be experiencing severe pain, difficulty standing or walking, and a loss of height. We offer a solution: kyphoplasty. This minimally invasive medical procedure can help repair the fracture and restore the normal height and shape of the vertebra, providing relief from pain and other symptoms.

Kyphoplasty is typically performed in an outpatient setting, such as a doctor’s office or an ambulatory surgery center. The procedure takes about an hour to complete and does not require a hospital stay.

Before the procedure, you will be asked to remove any jewelry or other objects that could interfere with the procedure. You will then be positioned on your back on an examination table. The skin on your back will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution, and a drape will be placed over your back to create a sterile field.

Using x-ray guidance, our experienced healthcare provider, Dr. Chad Stephens, will carefully insert a needle through your skin and into the fractured vertebra. A small balloon will then be inserted through the needle and inflated to create a cavity within the vertebra. Once the balloon is removed, a special cement is injected into the cavity to fill the space and stabilize the vertebra.

Most people experience a significant reduction in pain after undergoing kyphoplasty. The procedure can also help improve mobility and allow individuals to return to their normal activities more quickly.

In some cases, kyphoplasty may be recommended as a preventive measure to help stabilize a vertebra that is at risk of collapsing due to osteoporosis or another condition. In these cases, the procedure can help reduce the risk of future fractures and improve the overall stability of the spine.
