Learn About ReActiv8

What is ReActiv8?

ReActiv8 is a surgically implanted device that provides patients with new rehabilitative therapy. It stimulates the nerves of the muscles directly responsible for stabilizing your lumbar spine. It provides patients with meaningful, long-term relief by restoring their functionality.

ReActiv8 is a novel rehabilitative therapy that addresses an underlying multifidus muscle dysfunction. It is a device engineered to disrupt the pattern of back pain within the body. While options such as physical therapy and medication tend to treat symptoms, ReActiv8 goes straight to the source.

It is the first and only neurostimulation system FDA approved to provide long-term restoration of these stabilizing spine muscles. ReActiv8’s worldwide clinical trial demonstrated that re-activation of the neuromotor control helps to break the cycle of pain, improving patients’ confidence in performing their activities and helping reduce the use of pain medications.

How Does It Work?

The ReActiv8 system is implanted into your lower back by your physician. Two electrical leads are positioned to stimulate the nerves that control your multifidus muscle. The leads connect to an implantable pulse generator placed in the tissue of the upper buttock or lower back area.

ReActiv8 stimulates the nerves that control the spine muscles stabilizing the lower back. Over time, the activation of these muscles helps restore the body’s natural control over them, improving a patient’s function and decreasing their chronic low back pain.

The procedure is minimally invasive, fully reversible, and does not alter any anatomy of the spine.

ReActiv8 generates comfortable electrical pulses that cause your multifidus muscle to contract and relax. Therapy is patient-controlled and administered twice- 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evenings. The patient uses a handheld, wireless remote control to stop and start each session. Patients say the therapy feels like a gentle contraction of the deep back muscles.

Safety Information

ReActiv8 has a favorable safety profile compared to other implantable neurostimulators, with no lead migrations and low rates of adverse events, including infections, surgical interventions, and revisions. Always speak to your doctor about potential risks and benefits of ReActiv8

Are You a Candidate?

To qualify for the ReActiv8, a person must be experiencing low back pain for at least 3 months, not have had back surgery, and have no other pain conditions. Patients must also have had no lasting relief from physical therapy or medication and pain must be more prominent in the lower back than in the legs.
